Spanish 4th-8th

Casa di Mirโ€™s Spanish program gives Upper Elementary and Middle School students an immersive, engaging path to real-world fluency. Guided by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), whose nationally recognized proficiency guidelines shape our curriculum, students spend approximately 90% of each class hearing and speaking Spanish. Through structured language instruction combined with music, art, technology, and interactive learning, they build practical communication skills they can use every day.

Students learn by doing, take ownership of their progress, and connect their learning to the wider world, growing into confident communicators and curious global citizens.

Our program has three elements.

Language Proficiency

Students build a strong, well-rounded foundation in all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Careful attention to pronunciation, grammar, syllabication, and proper accentuation helps them speak clearly and write accurately. Lessons build step by step, so students strengthen each skill through practice and repetition and gain the precision and confidence to use Spanish correctly in a range of situations.

Linguistic & Cultural Connections

Learning a language opens a window into new ways of seeing the world. Students explore the connections between English and Spanish, such as cognates and shared language patterns, which deepen their understanding of both languages and make new vocabulary easier to learn. At the same time, they discover the rich traditions, music, art, and perspectives of Spanish-speaking cultures around the world. These connections build respect, empathy, and an appreciation for the diversity of the global community.

Practical & Creative Communication

Above all, language is meant to be used. Students practice everyday conversational Spanish through real-life scenarios, collaborative projects, and creative activities that bring the language to life. Music, art, and technology reinforce what they learn and give students meaningful ways to express themselves. By communicating authentically with classmates and teachers, students gain the confidence to speak up, take risks, and use Spanish naturally both in and beyond the classroom.
